Why the USD Stands Stronger than the IDR — and What Indonesia Can Do
Author: Agus Budi Harto, 2026-06-13 10:00:39

The United States Dollar (USD) has long been recognized as the world’s dominant currency, while the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) remains comparatively weaker. This disparity is not accidental; it is the result of historical, structural, and economic forces that have shaped global finance. Understanding why the USD is valued so much higher than the IDR requires examining both external and internal factors, and exploring what Indonesia could do to strengthen its currency.
Why the USD Is Much Higher than the IDR
The USD’s strength is rooted in its role as the global reserve currency. It is the primary medium for international trade, especially in commodities like oil and gold. This global demand ensures that the dollar remains perpetually in circulation and highly liquid.
Meanwhile, the IDR faces challenges such as trade deficits, reliance on imports, and inflationary pressures. Indonesia must often purchase goods and services in USD, increasing demand for dollars while reducing the relative demand for rupiah. Additionally, the Federal Reserve’s monetary policies—such as raising interest rates—make USD-denominated assets more attractive to investors, further strengthening the dollar against emerging market currencies like the IDR.
What Indonesia Must Do to Strengthen the IDR
For Indonesia to close the gap, it would require a multi-dimensional transformation across fiscal, industrial, and political domains:
- Fiscal and Monetary Discipline
- Keep inflation low and maintain a stable fiscal balance.
- Strengthen tax collection and reduce reliance on foreign debt.
- Trade and Industry Development
- Shift from exporting raw commodities to high-value manufactured goods.
- Reduce dependency on imports, especially in energy and technology.
- Investment and Capital Markets
- Attract foreign direct investment (FDI) by improving ease of doing business.
- Deepen domestic capital markets to make rupiah-based assets more appealing.
- Political and Legal Stability
- Build investor confidence through transparent governance and anti-corruption measures.
- Ensure long-term political stability to reduce risk premiums on the rupiah.
- Global Positioning of the Rupiah
- Promote the rupiah in regional trade agreements.
- Work toward making it a recognized currency in international settlements.
The Role of Information Technology in Strengthening the IDR
Technology can be a game-changer for Indonesia’s currency strength. By leveraging Information Technology (IT), Indonesia can accelerate economic modernization and global competitiveness:
- Innovation and R&D: Investing in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and cloud computing can create exportable digital products and services.
- Startup Ecosystem: Supporting fintech, e-commerce, and healthtech startups can attract global venture capital, bringing in foreign currency reserves.
- Digital Infrastructure: Expanding 5G networks, fiber optics, and data centers positions Indonesia as a regional tech hub.
- Cybersecurity: Building robust digital security systems increases trust in rupiah-based transactions.
- Digital Governance: Implementing e-government and digital taxation reduces inefficiencies and strengthens fiscal health.
- Human Capital Development: Training IT professionals ensures Indonesia can compete with countries like India in outsourcing and software development.
By embedding IT into every layer of the economy, Indonesia can reduce reliance on imports, increase exports of digital services, and attract foreign investment—all of which would support a stronger rupiah.
Conclusion
The USD’s dominance over the IDR is the result of global demand, strong U.S. institutions, and structural weaknesses in Indonesia’s economy. For Indonesia to elevate the rupiah, it must pursue fiscal discipline, industrial transformation, and political stability. Most importantly, the Information Technology sector offers a pathway to leapfrog traditional barriers and position Indonesia as a competitive force in the global economy.
