The Hidden Cost of Ignoring Engine Vibrations: How G-Engine is Changing Vehicle Diagnostics in Indonesia

Author: Agus Budi Harto, 2026-11-07 09:14:49

Background

In Indonesia, a country with over 150 million motorized vehicles on the road, car and motorcycle ownership is not a luxury — it is a necessity. From daily commutes in Jakarta to long-distance trips across Java, vehicles endure extreme heat, traffic congestion, and varied fuel quality. Yet, most drivers lack the technical knowledge to interpret early warning signs from their engines. A slight vibration when the AC is on, a drop in power during acceleration, or a rough sound from the fanbelt area is often ignored until the vehicle breaks down completely.

Traditional workshops often rely on manual inspection and experience. While valuable, this approach can lead to over-diagnosis. A simple issue like a loose fanbelt or worn engine mounting is sometimes diagnosed as a major engine overhaul, costing drivers millions of Rupiah unnecessarily. There was no simple, privacy-first digital tool that could give drivers a preliminary assessment before deciding to visit a workshop.

This is the gap that G-Engine: Engine Doctor AI was built to fill.

Problem

The core problem is threefold:

First, information asymmetry. Mechanics know more than drivers, which creates fear and mistrust. Drivers worry about being overcharged for repairs they don't understand.

Second, late detection. Most drivers only visit a workshop when the check-engine light is already on or the car can no longer run. At that point, minor issues have already escalated into RED-level damage, requiring expensive repairs.

Third, lack of health history. Unlike human health which has medical records, vehicles rarely have a centralized health log. Drivers forget when they last serviced, what the previous diagnosis was, or whether a vibration is new or recurring.

Existing OBD scanners are expensive, require hardware, and are not user-friendly for everyday drivers. What drivers need is a tool that lives on their iPhone, uses what they already have — their ears and simple observations — and provides a clear, color-coded result without storing sensitive data permanently.

Solution

G-Engine was designed as a Digital Engine Doctor with a privacy-first philosophy. Available now on the App Store as G-Engine: Engine Doctor AI, the app introduces a structured diagnostic flow that any driver can follow in less than 2 minutes.

  1. Smart Garage with Real Database
Instead of typing vehicle details manually, G-Engine provides a curated database of 53 car and motorcycle brands and over 500 models, including Toyota, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Daihatsu, Ford, and BMW. The database is hosted on our own server at engine.gemillang.co.id/api/car-brands, ensuring fast and accurate selection without scraping third-party services. Users can manage unlimited vehicles, search by plate number, and track health status at a glance.
  2. 5 Smart Questions - The Doctor's Interview
Inspired by how a real mechanic interviews a driver, G-Engine asks five critical questions: Is the check-engine light on? Is it hard to start when cold or hot? Does power drop when AC is on? Is there abnormal vibration? Is there power loss during acceleration? This eliminates guesswork and creates structured data for diagnosis.
  3. Privacy-First 3-Sound Recording
This is the most innovative feature. Users record engine sounds from three positions: Top of Engine, Fanbelt, and Exhaust. The recordings are saved ONLY in the iOS temporary directory as gengine_*.m4a files and are automatically deleted when diagnosis is complete, when the screen is closed, when reset is tapped, or when the app goes to background. Only the sound position label (e.g., "ATAS", "FANBELT", "KNALPOT") is sent to the server, not the raw audio for long-term storage. This approach satisfies Apple's strict microphone privacy requirements and builds user trust.
  4. Clear RED / YELLOW / GREEN Result
Instead of confusing technical codes, G-Engine provides a simple traffic-light system. RED means urgent — visit a certified workshop immediately. YELLOW means attention needed — e.g., loose fanbelt or engine mounting, which can be fixed at a regular workshop without major overhaul. GREEN means healthy. Each result includes actionable recommendations written in plain language.

The entire system runs on a custom backend built with CodeIgniter 4, using custom JWT authentication and no external AI APIs, making it lightweight, fast, and fully owned by our team at Gemilang Co.

Result

Early users of G-Engine report significant benefits:

Drivers now arrive at workshops with a preliminary diagnosis. Instead of saying "my car vibrates," they say "G-Engine shows YELLOW - fanbelt loose and engine mounting, not engine overhaul." This changes the conversation, reduces the risk of being overcharged, and saves an average of Rp 2-4 million per incident.

For fleet owners managing 10-20 vehicles, the Smart Garage provides a centralized health history. They can see which vehicles have had repeated YELLOW status and schedule preventive maintenance before a RED failure occurs.

For mechanics, G-Engine acts as a triage tool. It helps them prioritize urgent RED cases and quickly understand the customer's complaint through the 5 questions.

Most importantly, G-Engine has passed the Apple App Review process under Guideline 2.1 by demonstrating a complete user flow: registration, login with demo account demo@g-engine.com, garage management, vehicle addition from database, sound recording with visible privacy banner, diagnosis result, and account deletion — all recorded on a physical iPhone.

The mission is simple: Before going to the workshop, check G-Engine first.
